Directions

Take 1 cup (230g) of organic, unrefined shea butter and divide it into a bowl. Use a spoon or your fingers to scrape the shea butter from the measuring cup into an individual bowl.

Add 1 cup (240ml) coconut oil to a bowl. Pour the coconut oil into the bowl along with the shea butter. You can use the same measuring cup as you used to measure the shea butter, but it's fine not to rinse it first.

Add the vegetable glycerin and vitamin E oil. Measure 2 tablespoons (30ml) of vegetable glycerin into a bowl and add it to the bowl with the coconut oil and shea butter. Next, add 2 tablespoons (30ml) of vitamin E oil.

  • Vegetable glycerin, vitamin E oil, and specialty shops can be purchased at natural food stores, specialty shops, and online.
  • If you intend to sell lotions, make sure you get the best quality products.

Add 2 ounces (60ml) extra virgin olive oil to the bowl. Although measurements don't need to be exact, it is recommended that you use approximately 2 ounces (60ml) of olive oil. It's excellent as a body lotion because it is thick and rich. You can substitute the same amount if you like:

  • Jojoba oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Sweet almond oil

Blend the contents of the bowl in a blender at high speed until thoroughly combined. The consistency of body lotion can be thick, so make sure to stop the blender from time to time and scrape the sides. Blend for approximately 1-2 minutes. Once the ingredients have been thoroughly blended, scrape the sides.

  • Make sure you thoroughly clean your blender before disinfecting it!
  • You may consider buying a dedicated blender if you intend to make lotion often.
  • You can check the consistency of the lotion by placing a finger in it and then massaging it into your hands. You can check the consistency by dipping your finger into the lotion and rubbing it into your hand.

Place your lotion in a 20 oz (600ml) container and cover it with a lid. The lotion should be easy to transfer from the blender to the container. However, if your mixture is very thick, you can use a spoon to transfer it. If you are not planning to use the lotion immediately, it is best to keep the lotion in an airtight container. Plastic and glass containers are great options.

  • Make sure to store lotions in an airtight container if you sell them.
  • You can also attach a pump dispenser to the container's mouth if you are making your own lotion.

The body lotion can be kept in a dry, cool place for up to 18 months. This lotion is oil-based and not water-based, so you don't need to worry about bacteria or mold growing in storage. Oil is susceptible to oxidation and can degrade over time. Your homemade lotion should be used within 18 months to get the best results.

  • Make sure you keep your body lotion out of the direct sun.

Adding Color, Scent, and Extracts

how to make your own body lotion Adding Color, Scent, and Extracts

If desired, add 1 teaspoon (3 ml) of essential oil to your mixture. You can add your favorite essential oil while the lotion is still in the blender to give it a subtle scent. It's possible to use one essential oil or several. You might also try these scents if you're not sure.

  • Lavender oil is a soothing, mildly herbal scent.
  • Rose oil is a classic floral scent
  • Citrus oils such as grapefruit and sweet orange are ideal for a bright and energetic scent.
  • For a woody, deep scent, try patchouli oil or cedarwood oil
  • You can use myrrh, Frankincense, or benzoin for a strong, resinous fragrance.

Tip: Use therapeutic-grade essential oils for your lotion. If you aren't sure that synthetic fragrance oils won't irritate the skin, avoid them.

To incorporate the essential oil, blend the lotion for about 1-2 minutes. Now, you can test the lotion by rubbing your hands on it to determine how you feel about the scent. You can add essential oil to make the scent stronger. You should not use more than 2 teaspoons (6ml) of essential oils.

  • The essential oil can be very concentrated and cause skin irritation if not properly diluted.

To add color, use skin-safe micas, oxides, and powdered colors. These products are oil-soluble, so they work well in this recipe. The instructions will vary from brand to brand. However, the basic process involves mixing the pigment with oil and adding it to the lotion.

  • To ensure that products are safe for skin, shop at specialty shops and make sure to inspect the packaging. Remember that color can only alter the appearance of your lotion, so it is entirely optional to use it.
  • You can add some sparkle to your lotion with skin-safe mica formulas!
  • Refer to the product instructions for details on how much pigment you should use in conjunction with the lotion you have made.
  • These pigments can be used in large batches of lotion. It is difficult to add these pigments to small amounts of lotion.

To enhance the unique properties of your lotion, add extracts. There are many types of extracts available, and their properties can vary. Extracts can be purchased at specialty soap-making or beauty shops.

You can use 1 teaspoon (4.9 ml) of extract per 1 pound (453g) of product. This is an alarming rate to follow unless you are making large batches. For more information, refer to the individual instructions for each product.

  • Chamomile extract, for example, has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that can help soothe itchy skin.
  • Aloe vera gel and green tea extract are both skin-soothing extracts.
  • Anti-aging properties of evening primrose and buckthorn oils are often used.
  • Oat extract is great for sensitive skin.
  • Mallow extract is known for its intense moisturizing properties.

Powdered zinc oxide can be added to the lotion if you wish it to have sun protection. SPF 20 is a good amount that provides great sun protection. To find out how much zinc oxide is needed to attain SPF 20, multiply your lotion by.20. If you have 4 ounces (113g) of lotion, you'd use.8 ounces (22.6g) of zinc oxide.

Use a digital kitchen scale to measure the zinc oxide for the best results. You can use measuring cups and spoons if you don't own a scale.

Aloe-based Homemade Lotion

how to make body cream Aloe-based Homemade Lotion

This aloe-based lotion is lighter and less greasy if you prefer a smoother formula. It does not have an indefinite shelf-life, so it should be used within one month.

This recipe is an adaptation of a recipe I have used for years at Frugally Sustainable.

Aloe Lotion Ingredients

  • 1 cup aloe vera gel
  • 1 tsp + 1TBSP beeswax pastilles
  • 1/2 cup almond oil, jojoba oil, or any other liquid oil
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E oil (optional).
  • 1 TBSP Shea Butter (optional).
  • Essential oils of choice: I like 10 drops of geranium oil and 5 drops of lime.

Instructions for Aloe Lotion

In a double boiler or in a glass bowl placed over a saucepan of water, melt the beeswax and almond oil (or any other liquid oil) and shea butter (if used).

If using an immersion blender, remove from heat and place in a blender or mason container.

Allow it to cool to room temperature. It should be at room temperature and not just starting to harden around the edges. This will ensure that the lotion emulsifies appropriately.

If necessary, add vitamin E and any essential oils.

Blend on low with a blender, immersion blender, or a blender. Slowly add the aloe vera gel. You can use a spatula or a sponge to clean the sides.

Please keep it in a glass jar and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 6 weeks. This is a basic way on how do you make your own lotion.
